In the French text of this work, its author (Jean Molinet) exhorts various composers to go into mourning for the death of the maestro. Among these composers are Josquin himself and also Pierre de la Rue, Antoine Brumel and Loyset Comp\u00e8re. This short list shows how in Josquin&#8217;s lifetime there was already a generational awareness and recognition of a group of composers who led the way into the future of western music at the time. A group of artists who knew and appreciated their colleagues&#8217; music and had no hesitation in taking up the musical fruit of others to create new work. Of all of these, Josquin was certainly the one who left the most profound legacy for subsequent generations.
