Trained at the Escuela Oficial de Cinematograf\u00eda in Madrid, he made his debut in 1969 with an episode of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los desaf\u00edos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which he followed with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El esp\u00edritu de la colmena<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1973), a key work in modern European film, winner of the Golden Conch in San Sebasti\u00e1n. His next film came a decade later: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El sur <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1983) consolidated his style. In 1992 he directed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El sol del membrillo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, working together with painter Antonio L\u00f3pez. The film was a winner at the Cannes festival. His subsequent work combines film, visual essays and artistic installation, including projects like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alumbramiento<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Morte Rouge<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Piedra y cielo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After three years away from feature films, in 2023 he presented <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cerrar los ojos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the most important films in recent cinema.
