He gave up his history studies to attend classes with Ant\u00f3nio Reis at the Escola Superior de Cinema in Lisbon. His d\u00e9but film O Sangue<\/em> had its world premi\u00e8re at the Venice film festival in 1990. Casa de Lava<\/em>, shot in Cabo Verde, premi\u00e8red at the Cannes film festival in 1994. Cavalo Dinhero<\/em> won the Leopard for best director at the Locarno festival in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His last feature film, Vitalina Varela<\/em>, won the Golden Leopard and the Leopard for Best Actress at the Locarno festival in 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
