As a poet, prose writer and essayist, she is a legendary figure in Romanian literature. Born in 1942, she was an important opponent of the Ceaușescu regime, as a member of the group of writers who saw their literary vocation as a form of moral resistance.
She is the author of 17 books of poetry, 2 volumes of fantastic short stories, 11 of essays and a novel, for which she has won numerous national and international awards. Her books of poems, prose and essays have been translated into 25 languages, in a total of 98 different volumes.
In recognition of her contribution to European culture and her struggle for human rights, Blandiana was decorated with the highest distinction of the French Republic, the Légion d’Honneur, in 2009, the US state department gave her the Romanian Women of Courage Award and she was accorded the Romanian “Nihil Sine Deo” decoration in 2014.
