A feminist poet, lecturer and social and cultural activist born in Millville, New Jersey, in 1945. Her career as a poet began in 1970, extending to the recent Spanish translation in 2022 of part of her work in the bilingual anthology Para ser estrella a medianoche (Arrebato libros, 2022). She has won the American Book Award and Shelley Memorial Award of The Poetry Society of America. She has always been at the cutting edge, working with the most important artists of the second half of the 20th century. She has presented her work at talks and festivals all over the world, and her writing has been translated into various languages. Patti Smith has described her work as a psychic shield for our time. Apart from her work as a poet, Waldman is one of the founders of the Poetry Project at St Mark’s Church In-the-Bowery and in 1974 founded the Jack Kerouac School at Naropa University together with Allen Ginsberg and Diana di Prima, where she continues to work on its summer programme.
