Visual artist. Born in Barcelona in 1952, Amat’s work refuses to fit into any single category. It has been exhibited and published all over the world. His open conception of painting has led him to incorporate a range of artistic languages into his work.
He has done stage design for dance and theatre based on the work of García Lorca, Beckett, Juan Goytisolo, Koltès and Octavio Paz… He also directed and created the stage design for the oratories Oedipus Rex by Stravinsky/Cocteau, Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo by Caldara, el Sombrero de tres picos by Falla and the opera El viaje a Simorgh by Sánchez Verdú. He has illustrated various literary works including the Thousand and One Nights, the Odyssey or Seven Days by Mark Strand, with Bob Wilson.
His architectural interventions have included projects that combine painting, sculpture and ceramics: El mural de les olles, Villanurbs, Pluja de sang and Mur d’ulls, among others. In the same varied direction, he has taken painting into the realm of film-making in films like the only screenplay by Lorca, Viaje a la luna, Foc al càntir by Joan Brossa, El aullido, with a script by Cabrera Infante, Danse noire and Deu dits.
