José Luis Villacañas Berlanga

Professor of Philosophy at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Born in Úbeda in 1955, he has headed the department of Philosophy and Society at the above university for twelve years. Before this he was professor of Philosophy at the Universidad de Murcia, having previously been an assistant lecturer at the Universitat de València. 

He currently edits the journals Res Publica and Anales del Seminario de Historia de la Filosofía. His lines of work include German philosophy from Kant to Blumenberg, taking in idealism, Weber, Schmitt and Koselleck; contemporary political philosophy, concentrating on the question of imperialism, republicanism and their tensions with nationalism and populism, and the history of ideas and politics in Spain. He has published in all these areas. His latest books are Neoliberalismo como teología política (Barcelona, 2021), Luis Vives, una biografía (Barcelona, 2020), El proyecto intelectual de Alfonso X (Madrid, 2022) and La revolución pasiva de Franco (Madrid, 2022).
