Imagining Otherness: Coatlicue, Malintzin and the Virgin of Guadalupe
Talk presented and facilitated by:
The “monstrosity” or “abnormality” with which the inhabitants of the New World were judged in the 16th century by the conquistadors, to the point where they were seen as lacking a soul, is not so different from the way in which destitute immigrants are treated today. Three legendary, mythical female figures will be discussed in this encounter: Coatlicue, Malintzin and the Virgin of Guadalupe. They will be used to focus on the question of otherness – relations with human beings and nature – in today’s expanding context of global authoritarian standardisation.
