Setting out from three concepts: Mosaic, Opening and Re-thinking.
I see the Encuentros as a mosaic of contemporary propositions that invite participation in their broad programme through talks, dialogues, debates, performing arts, exhibitions, music, workshops and plural activities. As an audience, it is easy to feel trapped in the range of culture available and become a tessera, a tile within the Mosaic, to form part of the community whole it creates.
Opening the mind means leaving room for amazement, concern and reflection to carry on enquiring about the world around us.
The need to Re-think disposable materials leads me to Re-design and Re-use the banners used to publicise the first edition, designed by visual artist Frederic Amat.
Putting the three together led to “Open Windows”, a street intervention. By working on one side of the banners, I create an open window to reveal the most graphic part of the design: the black marks that have become the logo of the international biennial. The other side with the text referring to the previous edition is hidden, to avoid any confusion.
The result creates a colourful mosaic, with the re-used banners as the tiles, laid out in an irregular composition to create a certain dynamism on the front of the building where it is to be projected.
