Mauricio Sotelo

Composer.

Mauricio Sotelo is one of the most outstanding and internationally recognised Spanish composers today. His work includes the creation of so-called “spectral flamenco” or “alterflamenco”, the result of fusing the flamenco tradition with the aesthetic undercurrent and philosophical thought of avant-garde western musical practice. He has composed an extensive catalogue of work including various concertos and operas. His output results from commissions and collaborations with the top institutions and soloists in contemporary music, as well as with the leading flamenco artists of recent years. He has won major accolades including the national music prize in 2001 and a residency at the Berlin Institute for Advanced Study in 2011-12, among others. Sotelo teaches composition at the Escola Superior de Música in Catalonia and has lectured at institutions in Austria, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States. His work is published by Universal Edition.
