Georg Friedrich Haas

Composer.

Georg Friedrich Haas is considered one of the most important European composers of his generation. His work synthesises, in a highly original way, the Austrian symphonic tradition with exploration of the French and American experimental avant-gardes of the second half of the 20th century. This results in exploratory, uncompromising music that is at the same time imbued with great sensual sonority. He has composed several operas, concertos and a multitude of chamber pieces, including seven pieces for string quartet, all commissioned and performed by institutions and soloists of the highest international standing. Has won numerous awards, including the Austrian state grand prize for music in 2007 and the SWR composition prize in 2010. After teaching in Basel and Graz, he currently gives classes at the University of Columbia. His music is published by Universal Edition and Ricordi Berlin.
