Composer, conductor and musicologist born in Algeciras in 1968. Trained in Spain, Italy and Germany, he holds a law degree from the UCM and a doctorate from the UAM. Since 2001 he has been honorary professor of Composition at the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule de Düsseldorf and since 2019 professor of Composition at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid. He has taught for years in Dresden, Zaragoza and Hannover, as well as being a guest lecturer at many institutions in Spain, Germany, Austria, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Peru and Korea (Sibelius Academy, Mozarteum Salzburg, Musikhochschulen de Munich, Bremen, Núremberg, Berlín and others).
His accolades include three prizes in the SGAE competition (Spain 1996 and 1997), the INAEM-Colegio de España in Paris award (1998), the Irino Prize (Tokyo 1998), the Förderpreis from Siemens-Stiftung (Munich, 2000), the Bergischen Biennale prize (Wuppertal, 2002), the National Music Prize (Spain, 2003) and the Ibn Arabi award in 2015.
He has been composer in residence at numerous festivals in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Poland, among others. His extensive catalogue includes works of very different kinds, with highlights including orchestral works, chamber music, numerous stage projects and interdisciplinary work involving the use of installations, architecture and light as resources to stage them. His works have been performed at the most important festivals, opera houses and auditoriums throughout Europe (Deutsche Oper Berlin, Münchener Biennale, the Biennale di Venezia, Teatro Real de Madrid, Luzerner Theater, Salzburg Biennale, Musica Viva Munich, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and so on). His compositions are published by Breitkopf & Härtel.
