Angela Schanelec’s film is resistant to all categorisation because of its constant evolution. However, there are certain traits that make it recognisable. Precision and austerity of form, a certain Bressonian influence and her distinctive way of avoiding classic narrative make her stand out among her European contemporaries.

Angela Schanelec belongs to the group of film-makers who emerged in the 90s, the influential Berlin School, with colleagues like Christian Petzold and teachers like Harun Farocki. At this session we’ll talk about the intermediate states, silences and suspended times in her films.
