Introduces:
Josquin and his generation
On the death of Johannes Ockeghem, his student Josquin des Prés wrote the stunning chanson “Nymphes de bois”. In the French text of this work, its author (Jean Molinet) exhorts various composers to go into mourning for the death of the maestro. Among these composers are Josquin himself and also Pierre de la Rue, Antoine Brumel and Loyset Compère. This short list shows how in Josquin’s lifetime there was already a generational awareness and recognition of a group of composers who led the way into the future of western music at the time. A group of artists who knew and appreciated their colleagues’ music and had no hesitation in taking up the musical fruit of others to create new work. Of all of these, Josquin was certainly the one who left the most profound legacy for subsequent generations. Examples of this are the Jachet de Mantua motet “Dum vasots adriae fluctus”, which parodies the beginnings of some of Josquin’s most famous works, or the “Missa Mille Regretz” by Cristóbal de Morales, who adapted the famous “Canción del Emperador” (Mille Regretz) to the canonical text of the mass.
