A Mexican photographer of international standing. In 1969 she started at the university film studies centre at the Universidad Autónoma de México. This was where she met photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo, who subsequently invited her to be his assistant.
Since 1971 her work has been shown in more than ninety solo exhibitions and numerous collective ones in museums, galleries and institutions specialising in modern and contemporary photography in the Americas, Europe and Asia. Her work has been published and reproduced in different countries, in monographic and generic books, catalogues and journals.
A lot of criticism and literature has addressed her work. She has won the W. Eugene Smith award, first prize at the Paris Photo Month, grand prize in Hokkaido, Japan and the City of Arles prize in France.
In 2008 she won the highest accolade in the world of photography, the Hasselblad Foundation award. In 2014 the Mexican national council for culture and the arts paid homage to her work at the Palacio de Bellas Artes and in the same year she won the International Center of Photography’s Infinity award for her career.
Recently the National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington) recognised her with its Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in the Arts 2020, and she won the Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award 2021 from the Sony World Photography organisation.
