Iaiaiai The Iaiaiai group is made up of 11 members. Collaboration with the Brussels-based vocal group YouYou Group began in 2022, thanks to a professional visit organized by the Etxepare Institute. The project materialized in 2023 during the Irrintzi international creative laboratories organized by Aiaraldea Kultur Faktoria, as part of the “YouYou & Irrintzi, a new look at traditional vocal practice” initiative.
The project combined the youyou vocal technique from Africa and the Middle East with the Basque irrintzi, alongside other similar vocal traditions from around the world. The goal was to research, develop, and share traditional cultural practices with communities. As a result of this collaboration, we created a first 15-minute vocal performance and presented it in both Antwerp and Aiaraldea. Through this experience, we learned and developed an artistic and anthropological methodology that weaves together story, voice, sound, and space.
