José Luis Gueri

He is an essential figure in contemporary Spanish cinema. He made his debut with Los motivos de Berta (1983), premiered at the festivals in San Sebastián and Venice. He continued his career with films closely linked to his love for cinema and its history, including Innisfree (1990) and Tren de sombras (1997). In 2001 he directed En construcción, a winner at the San Sebastián festival and of a Goya in the documentary film section. This is a key film in thinking about the boundaries between fiction and documentary, and was ahead of its time in portraying the gentrification process in the Barcelona neighbourhood of El Raval. He subsequently directed En la ciudad de Sylvia (2007) and Guest (2010), among others. Alongside this, he has also taught internationally, influencing new generations with his poetic, experimental view. Recently, after a gap of ten years without directing a feature film, he premiered Historias del buen valle, one of the highlights of this season’s cinema.
