Juan Ignacio Cirac

A pioneer of quantum computing, he is one of the leading world authorities in quantum information theory and one of the fathers of the “second quantum revolution”. He began his training at the Complutense university in Madrid before lecturing at the University of Castilla la Mancha. During this time he had a long stay at the University of Colorado, and went on to become professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Innsbruck. In 2001, he joined the Max Plank Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching (Munich) to head its theoretical division. Since 2002 he has been an honorary professor at the Technical University of Munich. His theoretical work has opened up new lines of experimental research in materials science, high-energy physics, quantum chemistry and cryptography. He has won numerous prestigious awards internationally, including the Wolf, the Prince of Asturias and the Max Planck Medal. He is a member of the most important scientific societies, holds honorary doctorates from different universities around the world and is one of the most widely-quoted authors in his field, as well as a great advocate of physics among the general public.
