Maja Haderlap

Narrator, dramatist and poet.

Born in the Carinthia region of Austria, within a minority Slavic culture. She studied Drama Writing and German at the University of Vienna and taught in the Institute for Comparative Literature at the University of Klagenfurt, where she was director of the municipal theatre between 1992 and 2007.

Her first novel, Angel of Oblivion, published in Spanish as El ángel del olvido (Periférica, 2019), recounts the persecution of the Slavic minority in Carinthia and the experiences of country women in Ravensbrück concentration camp. It won the prestigious Ingeborg Bachmann and Rauriser prizes and has been translated into many languages.

Nachtfrauen, her second book translated into Spanish (as Mujeres en la noche), also by publisher Periférica, was shortlisted for the Austrian Book Prize in 2023. According to literary critics, this novel about a dynasty of women makes language into an inhabitable space.
