Victor Kossakovsky is a ground-breaking documentary maker who has won over 100 international awards. His distinctive body of work explores the interaction between reality and poetic moments. He began his film career in the Leningrad documentary studio as a camera assistant, assistant director and editor in 1978.
He studied scriptwriting and directing in Moscow. In 1989 he directed his first film, Losev, and in 1992 his acclaimed documentary The Belovs, which won the VPRO Joris Ivens prize, the IDFA audience prize and dozens of awards at international festivals.
In 2011, ¡Vivan las antípodas! was the film selected to open the Venice international film festival. In many of his films, such as Aquarela, Kossakovsky is at once director, editor and cameraman. Gunda, produced by Joaquin Phoenix, is his latest film, premièred at the Berlinale in 2020.
