Among Companion Species

Facilitated by:

DIALOGUE

Location

Baluarte Sala Cámara

Wildlife conservation can become a poetic act, but also a risky job. Veterinarian and poet María Sánchez writes about the rural setting, at the same time working with native breeds at risk of extinction. For his part, biologist Luis Arranz knows what it is to place his life on the line to protect the last wild animals living on nature reserves in the heart of Africa. The two of them will be talking about the poetics, the importance, the need and the risk involved in caring for and living with so-called “companion species”. During the session the short film Alas/Tierra, by Maddi Barber, will be screened.

EARTH  WINGS

Maddi Barber, based on “Esta es la mano que cuida” poem by María Sanchezen, 11min, 2022

Some photos of a passing sunset. A book of frogs held by hands. A woman’s face, reading. A wildcat among several hands. A passing sunrise. Based on the poem “Esta es la mano que cuida” (“This is the hand that cares”), by veterinarian and writer Maria Sanchez, this film is constructed as a diptych on the learning processes of our relationship with other species.
