Our notion of the human voice is inseparable from its own reverberation. Amplified by the thoracic cavity and projected through the air, the voice echoes outside and inside at the same time, in a feedback spiral. Hearing the voice again through reverberation involves not only understanding various issues of scale, but also hearing the echo of that initial babbling, of the wordless voice. In today’s world, the glass windows of the houses we inhabit show us the world in a transparent yet utterly silent way. Everything can be seen but nothing can be heard. Our relationship with our own echo changes. The way we perceive things clouds over, forgetting that until not long ago we were able to observe the world around us without any apparent frames or vanishing points. A question rises up from the back of the throat: Does the place make the voice, or does the voice make the place?
