When the Memorial association was founded in 1989 to devote itself to historical research and the defence of civil rights it was said that, “Russia is a great country with an unpredictable past,” as official memory and that of certain environments and cultural products have twisted its understanding. Initiatives like Memorial led to the opening of secret records and the restoration of memory. At the head of this association, winner of the Noble Peace Prize, is Irina Scherbakowa, who will be interviewed about the consequences of an unsettled past, essential in order to understand today’s Russia
