A widely recognized figure on the European music scene, Ramon Lazkano has developed a musical aesthetic marked by instrumental refinement and compositional boldness. His work approaches sound as material and sonic architecture as a constantly shifting rarefaction, uniquely merging the traditions of the German and French avant-garde. This synthesis gives rise to a distinctive voice in which the background of musical tradition and the artistic legacy of Basque culture also come to the fore.
Awarded the Prince Pierre Foundation Prize of Monaco and the Georges Bizet Prize of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in France, he has built his career in collaboration with numerous of Europe’s most prestigious festivals, orchestras, and ensembles. He has been artist-in-residence at the Royal Academy of Spain and the French Academy in Rome, and has been a professor at Musikene since its founding.
His instrumental writing and compositional thinking are iconically embodied in works such as Igeltsoen Laborategia (Chalk Laboratory), while he also explores vocal expression in equally characteristic pieces from his catalogue, such as Main Surplombe, culminating in the recent acclaimed premiere of his opera La Main Gauche at the Philharmonie de Paris in 2025.
